Fellow Certification Program

CDR is no longer accepting applications for the Fellow of the American Dietetic Association. As you already may be aware, CDR conducted a scheduled evaluation of the Fellow Program in 2000-2001. Based on evaluation data, CDR supports the concept of a Fellow recognition program as a means for ADA to honor those who have demonstrated exceptional professional characteristics, but believes that the goals of the Fellow program will be more effectively met through an ADA recognition program. CDR also made the decision to grant then-current Fellows with lifetime certificates.

The ADA Board of Directors appointed a Member Recognition Taskforce to investigate the process of developing a Fellow recognition program. One of its findings was that "Members expressed interest in a desire to have more value, emphasis, and publicity for current awards and honors at the DPG, affiliate and national levels. However, the majority of the comments stated that there was no interest in the creation of an additional member recognition program at this time." The ADA Board approved a motion that ADA would continue to promote all present awards and honors rather than developing and additional, new formal recognition program.

While CDR is not currently considering reinstatement of the Fellow certification program, the possibility of an advanced level practice certification in the future is not necessarily precluded. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

Entry-Level Practice Audit

The Examination Panel met in June to update the content outline (test specifications) for the entry level dietitian and dietetic technician registration examinations based on the results of the 2000 Dietetics Practice Audit. CDR conducts this empirical study every five years to validate dietetics practice roles and performance competencies needed for entry-level practice and to identify new and emerging practice roles. Examinations based on the newly updated content outlines will be implemented in September 2002. An article summarizing the results will appear in the February 2002 issue of JADA.

Professional Development Portfolio

In 1998 CDR awarded Oklahoma State University (OSU) with the contract to conduct the national pilot test of the Professional Development Portfolio, the new recertification process for RDs and DTRs. The intent of the pilot is to compare practitioners using the current continuing professional education (CPE) process with those using the Portfolio process and forms. A random sample of practitioners beginning a new certification period in June 1998 (3,000 RDs and 530 DTRs) was invited to participate in the study.

The test, spanning two years, compared a control group of 715 participants using the current CPE reporting recertification process with an experimental group of 714 participants using the Portfolio process. Both groups complete baseline, post, and delayed post surveys. The pilot surveys examine:

  • Perceptions of how well the Portfolio embodies the desired components of a recertification program.

  • Feelings about using formal self-reflection and learning needs assessment.

  • Selection of professional development activities.

  • Perceptions of how well the process impacted the transfer of learning to practice.

CDR presented the findings of the national pilot at the October 2000 Food and Nutrition Conference and Exhibition. Final results from the pilot and practitioner feedback are being used to refine the process and forms prior to implementation in June 2001.

Articles summarizing the results of the national pilot test appeared in the June and July 2001 issues of of the Journal of The American Dietetic Association. If you would like to provide feedback regarding the Professional Development Portfolio, please provide comments to 312/899-0040, ext. 4768 or redesign@eatright.org.

CPE Provider Accreditation Handbook and Application are Available

Strengthening the recertification process is one of the aims of the Professional Development Portfolio. The Portfolio provides dietetics professionals with tools for self-directed life-long learning. Additionally, providers of continuing professional education are essential to professional development. And, because CPE activities are integral to the Portfolio process, CDR has developed a new Continuing Professional Education Provider Accreditation Handbook so that only providers meeting these standards will be approved.

Feedback from practitioners regarding the new recertification requirements has also supported accreditation of CPE providers. In 1998 when CDR conducted a customer satisfaction and needs assessment survey of RDs and DTRs, one of the top three ranked prospective products and services was accreditation of CPE program providers.

The intent of the CPE Provider Accreditation program is to recognize providers that have met CDR's CPE Standards. This program is voluntary and distinct from the current CPE prior-approval process.

Become a CPE Accredited Provider today! For more information, contact Linda Flanagan at 312/899-0040, ext. 4869
.

Benefits of CPE Provider Accreditation include recognition by CDR as an accredited provider, enhanced practitioner satisfaction by targeting activities addressing practitioners' learning interests, marketing opportunities with exposure to a market of over 70,000 credentialed practitioners, and a streamlined process with a brief provider application process.
