Practice Tips

The Academy Quality Management Committee and CDR have collaborated to provide the following four downloadable Practice Tips at no cost to CDR credentialed practitioners:

Additional practice tips are available through the Academy Store.

Did You Know?

The revised 2018 Code of Ethics for the Profession of Dietetics is now available on the CDR and Academy websites at the following link? Final Approved Code of Ethics for the Nutrition and Dietetics Profession – Effective June 1, 2018.

Dietetics practitioners have voluntarily adopted this Code of Ethics to reflect the values and ethical principles guiding the dietetics profession and to set forth commitments and obligations of the dietetics practitioner to the public, clients, the profession, colleagues and other professionals. Additional ethics related resources are available at the following links:

The enforcement process for the Code of Ethics establishes a fair system to deal with complaints about members and credentialed practitioners from peers or the public. Support of the Code of Ethics by members and credentialed practitioners is vital to guiding the profession's actions and to strengthening its credibility.

In addition, all CDR credentialed practitioners are required to complete one hour of CPE related to the topic of ethics within each 5-year recertification period. Resources and guidelines for this requirement can be found here: cdrnet.org/ethics.

CDR News Highlights

Advanced Practitioner in Clinical Nutrition Certification

Because clinical nutrition is who you are not just what you do.

The perfect opportunity to advance your credential has arrived: CDR Advanced Practitioner Certification in Clinical Nutrition.

The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is offering an advanced practitioner certification in clinical nutrition for registered dietitians (RD) with at least four years of clinical nutrition practice. The next examination administrations will be in November 2018.

Exam dates, fee and deadlines are available at the following link: https://www.cdrnet.org/advanced-practice-examination-dates-and-fee-schedule.

New CDR Specialist Certification

CDR recently made the decision to move forward with the development of a Board Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition with a Critical Care emphasis. This new certification will address practice in critical care units for the pediatric patient population. The designation for this new specialist certification will be CSPCC.

The first examination administration is scheduled for September 2018. Applications are now available. For more information, please visit the CDR website: https://www.cdrnet.org/certifications/pediatric-critical-care-nutrition

Continuing Professional Education Approval Criteria

CDR has revised the current continuing professional education approval criteria to require that all continuing professional education activity types (excluding academic coursework) addressing diet and nutrition topics, include an RD or DTR in program planning. This policy change is effective for continuing professional activities offered on or after June 1, 2018 and for CDR credentialed practitioners recertifying beginning a new recertification cycle on or after June 2, 2018.

Practice Competencies Initiative

The CDR Competency Assurance Panel collaborated with the Academy’s Quality Management Committee on the development of dietetics practice competencies and performance indicators. These competencies and performance indicators will replace the current learning need codes for the Professional Development Portfolio recertification system in 2015 beginning with new registrants whose registration begins on or after June 2, 2015 and current registrants beginning their June 1, 2016 recertification cycle. An article describing the development and validation of the practice competencies was published in the June 2015 Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Informational webinars are scheduled for noon central time on each of the following dates:

May 3, 2018 (designed for students)
May 10, 2018

To register for these webinars, access past webinar recordings, or any additional information, go to: http://www.cdrnet.org/competencies.

This page also includes several practitioner, educator, and student resources. Recordings of webinar presentations made during 2016–2017 are available at the following link: https://www.cdrnet.org/competencies/webinars.

Board Certified Specialist In Obesity and Weight Management

The Commission on Dietetic Registration is pleased to announce the Interdisciplinary Specialist Certification in Obesity and Weight Management (CSOWM) credential. This credential will not only raise the standards in evidence-based practice benefiting clients and supporting CDR's mission of protecting the public, but it also emphasizes the importance of the healthcare team. Board Certification is granted in recognition of an applicant's documented practice experience and successful completion of an examination in the specialty area.

The CSOWM examination is administered annually in March and September. The content outline and eligibility requirements are available at the following link: https://www.cdrnet.org/interdisciplinary
