Craig Johnston, PhD

Craig Johnston is an assistant professor for the Department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Houston, Houston, Texas. He obtained his Ph.D. in Clinical Child psychology from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, and completed his pre-doctoral internship in clinical psychology at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He has worked for over 10 years conducting research as well as providing clinical service with diverse populations in a variety of settings.

Much of Craig’s work has focused on establishing relationships and securing grants to contribute to the advancement of child overweight treatment. The primary focus of his research is the development of effective prevention programs for child overweight with an emphasis on minorities. The aims of his current projects are designing, implementing and evaluating a school-based intervention for Mexican American children who are overweight. He is also actively investigating methods to prevent obesity in children between the ages of 5 and 9. In addition to duties associated with grant work, Craig actively engages with professionals from various backgrounds to collaborate on methods for decreasing the rise of child overweight. He is involved in education and dissemination of information at the local as well as national and international levels.
