COMPETENCY PLAN BUILDER AND LEARNING PLAN

Can practitioners still log CPEUs completed prior to filing a Learning Plan?
  • If the CPEUs were completed during the practitioners current 5-year cycle, they can still be logged for CPEUs.
  • Note: Practitioners will not gain access to the Activity Log until a Plan is on file.
What are the Essential Practice Competencies for CDR Credentialed Nutrition and Dietetics Practioners?
  • The Commission on Dietetic Registration has developed the Essential Practice Competencies for CDR Credentialed Nutrition and Dietetics Practitioners to provide overarching validated standards for two credentials: the Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), and the Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) or Nutrition and Dietetics Technician, Registered (NDTR). Practice competencies define the knowledge, skill, judgment and attitude requirements throughout a practitioner’s career, across practice, and within focus areas. Competencies provide a structured guide to help identify, evaluate, and develop the behaviors required for continuing competence.

Unlike entry-level competencies, which focus on preparation and evaluation for minimum competence upon completion of an ACEND (Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics) education program, the essential practice competencies are intended for use throughout a nutrition and dietetics practitioner’s career.
What resources are available to practitioners when completing the Learning Plan?
When must a practitioner complete the Learning Plan?
  • CDR strongly recommends that Learning Plans and Activity Logs be submitted by May 31st of the last year of the 5-year recertification cycle. However, CDR will accept Plans and Logs as late as 11:59 PM Central Time on June 30th of the final year of a recertification cycle. All activities must be completed by May 31st of the final year.

  • Note: Practitioners will not gain access to the Activity Log until a Plan is on file.
Does a practitioner need to complete a new Learning Plan for each 5-year cycle?
  • No, once a practitioner files a Plan using the Competency Plan Builder, it will roll over to the next 5-year cycle. CDR recommends that practitioners review the Plan at least once every 5-years to ensure it adequately reflects the practitioner's learning needs and goals.
Does a practitioner need to have a competency from each spheres on their Learning Plan?

No, practitioners are only required to have at least one competency from Sphere 1: Ethics.

Does a practitioner need to complete an activity for each competency on their Learning Plan?
  • No, practitioners are required to meet the minimum CPEU requirements (75 RDs/50 DTRs).
  • Note: At least one CPEU must be related to ethics
Does a practitioner have to update the Learning Plan if a competency is used that is not a part of their Plan?
  • No, any Sphere and Competency may be selected from the dropdown list when logging activities.
  • Note: Practitioners have access to all Spheres and Competencies when logging activities on the Activity Log, regardless of the Spheres/Competencies added to the practitioners' Plan.
What if a performance indicator is not listed on a Practitioners Learning Plan?
  •  Although the provider may provide suggested performance indicators* for the CPEU event, the practitioner will select the competency from the dropdown list that describes the knowledge, skills and behaviors gained from activity completion.
  • Performance Indicators* describe an inter-related set of behaviors and the level of expected performance that can be evaluated to determine whether the competency has been met.

  • Note: Practitioners will no longer select performance indicators when logging CPEU activities. The practitioner will select the sphere and competency from the dropdown list that describes the knowledge, skills and behaviors gained from activity completion.
